Siddhartha Central School has achieved a remarkable honour by receiving the State Award for the Best School in Agricultural Activities 2025, instituted by the Kerala Department of Agriculture as part of the Farmers’ Day celebrations.
Spread across nearly 12 acres, Siddhartha is a truly green campus. Thousands of trees are nurtured across the spacious campus, providing shade and creating a nature-friendly environment for students. The school has been carrying out exemplary initiatives in agricultural education, giving equal importance to agriculture alongside academic learning.
The school has an Agriculture Department, functioning under the name Agricultural Knowledge Extension Department, and has allocated four periods every month specifically for agriculture. Through these classes, students receive both theoretical knowledge and practical training in scientific farming methods.
Students from three clubs—Agriculture Club, Seed Club and Nature Club—take the lead in the school’s agricultural activities. Under the guidance of the school’s Agriculture Instructor, Mr. Ashik Dath, many students are actively engaged in various farming activities.
The school promotes several modern agricultural techniques, including hydroponics, aquaponics, vegetable cultivation under rain shelters and wick irrigation. In addition, the school undertakes mushroom cultivation, vegetable seedling production, banana cultivation, ginger, turmeric and various tuber crops. The vermicompost required for farming is produced within the school itself.
The school also maintains a variety of livestock and birds, including chickens, ducks, turkeys, emus and pigs.
With the support of the Kerala Agricultural University, demonstration gardens have also been established. Stingless bee farming, marigold cultivation and dragon fruit cultivation are among the other agricultural initiatives successfully carried out under the dedicated care of the students.
It is a matter of great pride that the nursery section students have also successfully undertaken microgreen cultivation, an innovative modern farming method.
Under the leadership of the School Management and Siddhartha Foundation, 250 native coastal Nediyan coconut saplings were distributed and planted by students in various households in Nedumbana Grama Panchayat, with the aim of conserving indigenous coconut varieties.
The school has also organised numerous seminars, field visits and training programmes related to agriculture. Inspired by the school’s exemplary agricultural activities, around 400 students have taken up farming in their own home gardens.
The school’s agricultural initiatives have been greatly inspired by the deep love and commitment towards nature and agriculture shown by the School Manager, Mr. Suresh Siddhartha. Principal Mrs. Rohini V. L. has provided leadership and supervision for the agricultural activities of the school.
The school has already received several prestigious recognitions, including the Vanamitra Award of the Kerala Forest Department and the Shreshta Haritha Vidyalayam Award of the Seed Club, among others.
The wholehearted support and cooperation extended by the Kollam Krishi Vigyan Kendra and the Nedumbana Krishi Bhavan have been invaluable in strengthening and expanding the school’s agricultural initiatives.
This state-level recognition is a proud testimony to Siddhartha Central School’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation and experiential learning, making it a model green school for the community.
